A trophy and other, different kinds of awards, like medals and certificates are very important to competitors. They serve as a reminder of who won what event. Whoever wins awards and trophies feels accomplished about what they are able to do. Trophies originated many years ago, and now almost every event offers them to winners.
The concept of a trophy or any other award has been around for a long time. Some of the first trophies were probably hunting trophies. The hunter would use the skins and pieces of the animals that he killed in his home. Skin rugs and clothing were some of the first animal trophies. During Greek and Roman times when the Olympic Games were first created, the trophies from those games were olive branch crowns. This was a symbol of their skill as an athlete. From there, the concept of playing a game to win something evolved. Now, almost any competition has a trophy or award for the winner or winners. For small children, the trophy presentation involves giving one to all of the players, such as with a little league baseball team. The hunting trophy has also evolved. Many people who hunt like to mount the heads of what they killed on their walls.
A trophy and other awards are presented at many different events. Sporting events, like the World Cup and Super Bowl have very famous trophies. Sporting trophies are given for most every sporting event. Academic competitions also give out trophies. Other games give different awards. Swimming and track traditionally are awarded with medals and plaques and ribbons are given for things that are not as “big” as major sporting events. Ribbons are traditionally given out at fairs. Plaques are used for office prizes. Some people frown on giving trophies because they say it breeds too much competition, but competition is intrinsic in human nature.
Winners of trophies and awards get a sense of pride in themselves. Any trophy is a fun way to show others what you have done. Part of this process is necessary to human nature. So for this reason, the trophy and the trophy winner’s legacy will be around for a long time.
