When we are suffering from a headache we usually try to think of ways to stop the pain. However, because there are different types of headaches, the treatments may work for only a few of the headache types. There are two different methods of curing the pain caused by headaches. These types of headache treatment are called prophylactical and abortive headache treatments.

The prophylactic treatment needs to be taken everyday in order to reduce the frequency of the attacks and to control the severity of the headache. Abortive headache treatment is started only when the headache starts.

You should understand that your doctor will not prescribe any prophylactic headache treatment unless you are suffering from several, frequent headache attacks per month. Furthermore, when you take the prophylactic medication you will be monitored for side effects like weight gain, water retention, lethargy, memory impairment and hallucinations.

The treatment of headaches with prophylactic medicine begins with a low dose. The dose is then increased monthly. You will also be checked every month or so to find out if the treatment is taking effect. Your doctor will also check that you are not on any other types of medicine or vitamin supplements during this early phase of your headache treatment.

It is very important to know whether the sufferer is or becomes pregnant. If you do become pregnant, then your doctor should be informed so that tests can be done to discover any possible effects to the foetus.

The major prescription drugs that are used for headache treatment are beta blockers like Tenormin and Lopressor. Calcium channel blockers such as Cardizem, Dilacor, and Procardia are also used. Doctors may also prescribe anti-depressants such as Elavil and Zoloft. You can also be given Serotonin Antagonists like Sansert.

Sometimes anti-convulsants such as Tegretol, Depakote, and Dilantin are given for headache treatment. Cafergot and Sansert, which are ergot derivatives, could also be prescribed by your doctor. The abortive headache treatment that you can take for your headache pain is generally the over the counter type. These include Paracetamol, Aspirin, Tylenol, Panadol, Motrin, and Advil to name but a few. Tylenol and Panadol are known as Acetaminophen drugs. Motrin and Advil belong to the group of drugs that are known as Ibuprofen.

Further to these headache medications there are also non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. The side effects of NSAIDs like Naprosyn and Meclomen include nausea, gastrointestinal pain, dizziness, diarrhea, light-headedness and constipation. These headache medications can also cause some people to get side-effects in the form of a different type of headache.

Since these drugs can cause side effects, you should consult your doctor and find out whether they are suitable for you or not. People who prefer an ‘alternative’ headache treatment should ask their doctor whether he thinks the alternative medicine, such as aromatherapy, will work.

Episodes of anxiety attacks can be uncomfortable, unpleasant and unhealthy. Because of this, most people head to the medicine cabinet for a quick relief. While some may find medications as an effective way to battle anxiety, there are more natural and equally effective ways of dealing your excessive emotion without subjecting the body to different negative side-effects.

Exercise – Exercise improves the health of the body and mind, and improves the overall condition of an individual person. A 30-minute exercise, 3-5 times a week is plenty to supply anxiety relief. Increasing to at least an hour of aerobic exercise daily provides maximum benefits for relieving stress and anxiety.

Sleep – A favorite adage, “early to bed and early to wake produces a man healthy, wealthy and wise,” speaks of the need for sleep in the well being of any man or woman. Qualitative sleep for 8 hours a day is a proven and effective technique to beat stress along with anxiety attacks.

Wholesome dietary program – Along activities, diet plays a substantial role in the well being of the body. Eating healthy food maintains the usual chemistry and hormones of the body as well has provides resistance to common ailments that permeates the risk of panic attacks.

Avoid unnecessary stressors – Most stressors are inevitable and it is in addition unhealthy to turn your back to a particular circumstances that have to be addressed. Still, some circumstances and people cause unnecessary stress that result to panic attacks. Avoid people that stress you out, quickly learn how to say ‘no’, trim down your to-do-list, avoid sensitive themes like politics and religion, etc.

Relaxation techniques – Yoga, meditation, Taiji, progressive muscle relaxation, visualization and breathing exercises can reduce anxiety and promote the feeling of relaxation and emotional health.

Keep a positive outlook – While it is very difficult to preserve a good attitude when experiencing an anxiety attack, it is very crucial to be more conscious and help stay in control over the situation to battle your condition. Do not think “Oh no, not again!” or “I’m screwed” when an episode hits you. Think that it will be over soon and control your feelings so that your anxiety will now get worse.

If the above mentioned techniques do not work for you, it is probably time to consult a health professional about your health. Since symptoms of anxiety attacks may be a result of other psychological and physical conditions, you need to see your medical doctor first and get a complete physical in order to rule out any other possible causes.

If anxiety prevails and indications last for more than 1 to 2 weeks, in particular when you have no notion why, see a trained therapist.

An individual with anxiety condition usually goes under medicine, therapy or both. Prescription drugs for anxiety are normally antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Even so, they offer short-run relief and therefore, other therapy is frequently recommended. Therapies given are cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure therapy. They’re both effective ( particularly when mixed with medicine) to treat anxiety disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps patients to exchange negative thoughts with positive ones.

Exposure therapy, alternatively, helps treat panic attacks by subjecting the patients to control fear in a safe and controlled environment. Through repeated exposure, patients gain greater self control and a great deal of confidence in facing fearful situations.

What you don’t know about Anxiety and Panic Disorders

We receive tons of emails via our web site from anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients each and every month. What is extremely evident from most of these is that people have plenty of misconceptions regarding anxiety and panic disorders. To be able to cure them, we need to know some details about them first.

Firstly, anxiety and panic disorders are not mental illnesses. They are simply behavioral conditions stored as memory, instinct and habit in the Amygdala, an almond-shaped set of neurons inside the brain. The National Institute of Mental Health has confirmed that conditions such as anxiety, depression, autism, PTSD, OCD, and phobias are caused by abnormal functioning of the Amygdala.

Secondly, anxiety and panic disorders conditions Can be eradicated 100% permanently, contrary to what most think. We already know that stress, bereavement and life circumstances are only the triggers for the anxiety and that Amygdala is the cause. If we can change the way the Amygdala reacts, you would be anxiety free. The good news is we are able to alter the reaction of Amygdala quickly and permanently with immediate results.

Please go to our Anxiety Panic Away website listed below for more information on how your can completely cure anxiety and panic attacks so that you can make an informed decision as to the greatest course of treatment that would best fit you.

L-Theanine is a distinctive free form amino acid found only in the tea plant and in the mushrooms Xerocomus badius and particular species of genus Camellia, C. japonica and C. sasanqua. Often, drinkers of green tea report a feeling of calmness they feel right after ingesting a cup or two although green tea has around half the caffeine of coffee. This is because of the high L-Theanine content.

In addition to reducing anxiety symptoms, research have shown L-Theanine may be effective in promoting concentration, supporting the immune system, improving learning performance, lowering blood pressure, increasing formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, and raising brain dopamine levels among other positive benefits with no known downside.

Studies in cooperation with Taiyo Kagaku Co., The University of Shizuoka, and the Family Planning Institute of Japan have shown that women taking 200 mg L-Theanine daily have reduced incidence of PMS symptoms. These symptoms include physical, mental, and social symptoms. Overall, a substantial alleviation of PMS symptoms by L-Theanine was observed.

While still under investigation, L-Theanine appears to have a role in the formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA). GABA blocks release of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, playing a key role in the relaxation effect.

Everybody is aware of the effects stress and anxiety can have on an individual’s physical state of well-being. Fascinating neurochemistry research has revealed that given a shot of GABA basically turned back the clocks in the brains of older monkeys, whose brain function briefly operated at levels normally seen in monkeys less than half their age.

GABA, or gamma-amino butyric acid, is a neurotransmitter chemical that’s important for improving how brain cells transmit messages to one another and acts to put a damper on unwanted brain signaling activity. Although GABA’s age-related decline hasn’t been documented in humans, a host of studies in mammals, including other primates, suggests that a comparable process is at work in individuals.

Monkeys ages 26 and 32 — considered old age for monkeys — that got GABA directly delivered to their neurons responded to visual patterns, such as flashing vertical and horizontal lines, in much the same way as monkeys aged 7 to 9 years old did.

Without GABA delivery, the monkeys’ aged brains had much more difficulty firing neurons that particularly gauge various elements of depth perception, motion and color. Rather, older monkeys have much more random firings that make it difficult to observe visual nuances. In young monkeys, GABA had no effect since their brains already had optimal GABA functioning.

L-Theanine is regarded as to be safe depending on its historical use as a component of tea and on positive toxicology studies. Tea is the most consumed beverage worldwide after water, and has been consumed for thousands of years by billions of people. It’s estimated that a heavy tea drinker (6-8 cups every day) will consume between 200 to 400 mg of L-Theanine every day.

Although dosage for depression and anxiety disorder remain individual, it is recommended to take 100 to 200 mg 1 to 3 times every day for anxiety relief. Depending on the results of clinical studies, it’s been established that L-Theanine is effective in single dosages in the range of 50-200 mg. It’s suggested that subjects with higher levels of anxiety take a dose at the higher end of the effective range (100 – 200 mg) for overcoming anxiety.

Our natural desire is to be happy, and when we move away from it, we encounter fear. This fear is truly hundreds of thousands of years old, for it arises from the biological programming of our species. While we may not have to deal with a sabre-toothed tiger on any given day, we still make use of those very reactions to cope with events looming ahead. We think, “Will I be fired for making that mistake at work?” or “Will I be able to meet the mortgage after I fix the car?” or “Will my health continue to decline?” or “Will my relationship fall apart after that argument we just fell into?”

Running questions with this kind of urgency and helplessness teaches our brains to prepare now for future threat by loading our bodies up with the stress hormone cortisol. Anxiety is our anticipation of a threatening future. We imagine having even less of the little that we have these days. This anxiety does not assist us at all to meet the future any better. In fact, it weakens and exhausts us. We usually be concerned most about things that we cannot even control. Worrying about your dental visit, for instance, won’t make the visit better.

Anxiety, actually, is a silent killer. It is enervating, and it drains you of purpose and hope, faith and initiative. It fogs up your thinking. And it makes the body susceptible to illness. When anxiety–a fear of an event in the future–is high enough then you feel a deep sense of helplessness. This, consequently, converts into depression. You even begin to view the past as disappointing.

Caught between a miserable past and a frightening future, you create a pattern of emotions that may result in a range of mood disorders, including manic-depression. How do we escape from this vicious cycle?

Here is what I did 20 years ago and I’ve never since suffered from any serious mood disorder. I began to cultivate my awareness of my mood swings–from elation to black despair.

I did this by basically watching myself when I was manic, and watching myself when I was depressed, and watching what I did to turn on these states. For example to get depressed, I utilized my love of literature to concentrate on dark, morbid, and unhappy stories regarding life. And to get elated, I’d speak a lot, move quite quickly, and do things in a dramatic way. A fascinating thing occurred when I made my unconscious behavior conscious. I could not take my mood shifts seriously. This is what I learned from that experience: when you’re able to watch yourself over the course of a couple of weeks, you produce a curious detachment. A paradoxical situation developed for me: I found it challenging to remain anxious and depressed when I was observing myself feeling anxious and depressed. Eventually, anxiety and depression are culturally-induced patterns of thinking that could be overcome via a strategic cultivation of awareness. When you become your own observer, you weed out the unconscious habits that afflict you. In spite of the billions of dollars spent to heal anxiety and depression, and all of the mood disorders and behavioral anomalies that come up from them, the cure is simple, quick, and free.
