Dealing with the loss of someone close to us can be very difficult for anyone to handle. Of course it was devastating when my girlfriend’s mom died. Shortly after her mom’s passing she started to realize how much she was forgetting things. Her forgetfulness really started to terrify her because she was always on the ball, super organized and a perfectionist. If she misplaced her keys or forgot an appointment it would drive her into an panic attack. However, she immediately thought that this forgetfulness must be from some sort of undiagnosed disease and then those thoughts would attack her… what if it’s a brain tumor or cancer? What if I die? Why can’t I get this Panic away from me?
She began feeling unsure of herself, unable to focus or concentrate and scattered as more time went by. With all the irrational and obsessive thoughts, a panic or anxiety attack would send her spiralling out of control. She would research on the internet for hours trying to find which disease she had. She was certain she was going crazy. She wouldn’t talk about her anxiety attacks with any friends or family believing that they would all think she’s going crazy too. She was scared.
Grieving is a process and it takes time, death is a huge tragedy. It’s not uncommon to feel forgetful, overwhelmed or scatter-brained. She became obsessed with running to the doctor every time she’d forget something because her mind couldn’t think logically at the time and her obsessive thoughts seemed completely normal. She asked her doctor to perform many different tests but he concluded that she had General Anxiety Disorder, surprised but a little relieved, she didn’t know how to stop the anxiety on her own.
After seeing her mother die, it’s no surprise that at the root of her anxiety was the fear of dying. Most reasons of panic and anxiety come from being fearful of something. Battle with panic or anxiety attacks? Ask yourself what you’re afraid of.The fear during the night would wake her up and have her trembling. Her obsessive, imagined thoughts consumed her.
